Chapter Seven

A few days had passed since Chris had gone to see Hugh and Hugh had told him all about the threat to his life. At first, Chris had been filled with anger that a White Wolf could come down here and threaten the man he loved, but after that he was filled with frustration that he couldn’t do anything about it. Between the two of them he wasn’t the warrior (he liked to joke that he was the beauty and Hugh was the beast, but in reality, he thought Hugh was the most attractive man he had ever seen). Even if he had been the warrior, he was carrying a child and he wasn’t about to risk his daughter in battle. But neither did he simply want to wait for the White Wolf to come and fight Hugh, and Hugh didn’t want that either.

Hugh wanted to return home and face the problem head on. He wanted to go up to Casper, challenge him, and let fate take its course. But Chris suggested they leave it be for the time being. Although Hugh was stubborn and still believed that the Oracle was untrustworthy, Chris couldn’t forget what he had seen, both in the past and in the future. There was no doubt in his mind that what the Oracle had shown him had actually happened, but if that was the case then he had to accept that Casper had seen the death of Hugh. However, the one sliver of hope that Chris clung to was that the Oracle usually showed images devoid of context, which meant that perhaps Casper had been mistaken and only believed what he wanted to believe. Even that was a grasp at straws though, as from what Hugh described the White Wolves were formidable and he would rather Hugh not get into a fight with one if he could help it.

But the thought that anyone could think his daughter was an abomination struck Chris right in the heart, as though someone had thrust a spear that split him in two. His pain ran deep. His daughter wasn’t even born yet and already there were people who were prejudiced against her, who hated her. The world was cruel, some would say too cruel for a child, and all he wanted was to protect her. He hoped that one day he would be able to tell her that she could be whoever she wanted to be without having to fear what other people thought, but it dawned on him that she would always have to hide herself, and he eventually began to empathize with what Hugh had to do all his life.

One quiet evening, Chris walked into Hugh’s study and wrapped his arms around him, kissing him tenderly, telling Hugh that he loved him.

“I’m not complaining, but what was that for?” Hugh asked. Chris shrugged.

“I was just thinking about everything you’ve been through in life, and everything our daughter is going to go through. How did you cope
